“My Crickets: A Little Decameron #10”

It's raining in Los Angeles and has been all night. I can't recall the last time we had a heavy April rain here. But even in this ongoing rain the mourning dove is calling out, although more tentatively than yesterday.
I enjoy the rain, but the darkness of the sky overhead is somewhat depressing. Even at 6:30 there is no sign of any sunrise, and it appears that none of the neighbors who share the inner courtyard have risen from their beds. Our lights seem to be the only sign that anyone else is up, and this on Monday morning. It’s as if everyone has decided to hide under their covers.
I'm afraid my cricket has died. I didn't hear him in any room of the house all night. I still put out a small plate of mashed bananas just in case.
There have now been 9,653 deaths from COVID-19 in the US.
